Funny how for years I have preached the concept of "playing to ones' strengths" in the music business. Denouncing great guys in this industry, who although the sweetest people, took on responsibilities way outside of the realm of their successes and ended up failing miserably at what seemed like potentially strong situations.
I started Flagship because good friends said I was ready to take a leap of faith. What I leapt into was an area of complete uncertaintly. I didn't understand what works and doesn't work at retail, etc.
Today I make a decision to play to my strengths.
In 1991 I was relieved of my duties because of a fantastic demo by 60's popsters, The Cowsills. There was a song called "Is It Any Wonder?" that had me transfixed. I played it for Atlantic President Doug Morris, without telling him who the act was, and he loved it. When he found out it was the forty-something Cowsills, he was angered. A&R was for finding young and upside-driven talent. I had found has-beens and unless I was willing to recant my excitement, I was to be gone. I wasn't willing, and so, I was gone.
Flash forward 14+ years later and a tragic circumstance regarding Cowsill brother Barry, tragically lost in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina, his body was found over three months later. Not in the band when I flipped for them, we had never met, but the name and the story touched me greatly. I decided to do something.
Matching artist with repertoire I turn to Flagship Recordings artist Eugene Edwards and suggest covering "Is It Any Wonder?" He loves it. I contact Bob Cowsill. He's thrilled to hear from one of his biggest fans from 1991. We are a go. Bob's involvement to be determined.
In the next couple of weeks, Eugene Edwards will cover The Cowsills tune, and after we finish recording, mastering, etc. I will seek a shot at radio. Be aware. This is the greatest example of a "labor of love" that I could muster in the most uncertain of times for my career and my label.
I will keep you posted.

We had a bit of a snafu and Eugene's album was off iTunes for a bit, but it's back now and fully linked from the Flagship website. If you have a spare buck or two, try a song from it and let me know if you think it's your cup of tea. We're starting to get some nice reaction from College Radio.

Hey Marc! I know that you donated a bunch of stuff for this auction (and there are a lot of tickets towards it, too!), but I wanted to ask you if you could mention the auction on your LJ page? The auction ends tomorrow, and I don't think we've even hit $3000 yet. It's just been so hard to let people know about it now that barenaked.net is down. I understand if you can't, you aren't there to promote other people's projects. If you can, the address is http://www.dawezl.com/auction.html Either way, everyone really appreciates your donations. They're one (five) of the most popular items, after the autographed bottle of Jackson-Triggs Chardonnay and the incredibly hard to find original yellow tape.

A World Café performance taped last month by Oakdale, CA songwriter Brett Dennen is set to air on the nationally-syndicated NPR show on Tuesday, August 23 rd. (Listeners can check local station air times at http://www.worldcafe.org/station.php). Music fans can also catch World Café on Sirius Satellite Radio channel 108 at 9 p.m. EST, or they can listen online at 2 p.m. EST at http://www.worldcafe.org/listen.php. World Café features a mix of music: blues, rock, world, folk, and alternative country with live performances and interviews from celebrated and emerging artists. The acclaimed program is distributed to over 185 stations across the country. Dennen performed four songs, including "Desert Sunrise," which is the single impacting at Commercial AAA radio this week.
The World Café performance follows closely after a stellar and inspiring performance by Dennen last week at the Radio & Records Triple A Radio Summit in Boulder, CO. There he captivated radio programmers from across the country with his endearing, unique sound and style. In addition to the adds he will garner from that appearance, Dennen is already receiving airplay in a number of markets across the country, including Boston, New York City, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, Austin, Louisville, and many others.
Dennen will also be part of a Borders Listening Station program that will put his self-titled album in store listening stations across the country from October 10, 2005 through January 10, 2006. The album was originally released with limited online distribution last year on the Southern Californiabased Three Angels and a Saint Label, but is now enjoying national exposure via the FLAGSHIP Recordings label and distribution via the new independent UMVD arm, Fontana Distribution. It was released on July 12th.
Dennen has already received over a year of airplay from influential KCRW DJ Chris Douridas, who started spinning tracks from the album on Valentines Day 2004, and has continued to play them repeatedly. This led to airplay on other KCRW shows, as well as airplay on WXPN’s World Café. Says Douridas about Dennen’s disc: “He's the unsigned artist of the year. Rarely does music come along so unadorned, so pure in spirit, and so eloquently written. ‘Desert Sunrise’ generated more phone calls than anything I've played all year.”
Brett Dennen can be found online at www.brettdennen.com.
